Why transparent PNG images turn white in JPEG exports
Understand alpha transparency, white-background compositing and edge halos when preparing logos and product assets.
An explanatory example, not a watermark-removal result or performance benchmark.
| Operation | Output | Transparent areas |
|---|---|---|
| Crop | PNG | Preserved |
| Split | PNG | Preserved |
| Compress to WebP | WebP | Preserved |
| Compress to JPEG | JPEG | Filled white |
A checkerboard is usually a preview aid
The gray checkerboard in an editor often represents transparency rather than pixels in the file. A transparent asset can sit over different colors, while an apparently white background may actually be opaque. Preview the original against both light and dark surfaces before deciding on an output format.
JPEG needs a background color
JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. This tool composites transparent pixels over white before JPEG encoding, producing a white rectangle when placed on a dark page. That is a format and compositing consequence, not a broken download. Keep PNG or choose WebP when a logo needs to retain transparency.
Inspect partially transparent edges
Anti-aliased edges, shadows and fine hair can contain partially transparent pixels. Artwork prepared against white may show a pale fringe over dark backgrounds. Check the downloaded WebP on its intended surface, particularly around lettering and product outlines. This tool does not remove backgrounds or repair halos; changing the format cannot automatically fix the source.
Combine crop, split and compression deliberately
Crop first when you need a different frame, and download its PNG. Split also exports PNG tiles. Decide about compression afterwards: compare transparent WebP, or choose JPEG only if a white background suits the use case. Files are not carried between pages automatically, so save before navigating. Check both transparency and actual size after exporting.
Checklist
- Verify transparency against light and dark backgrounds
- Keep PNG or choose WebP when transparency matters
- Inspect edges; format conversion is not background removal
