Remove people from photos: check shadows and reflections too
Use a travel-photo scenario to plan a selection, identify overlap with your subject and inspect the background after removal.
Separate the subject from the person to remove
Imagine a group centered in a travel photo with a passerby on the right. Check whether they overlap before editing. If the passerby's arm obscures a subject's clothing, removal cannot guarantee the true fabric detail underneath. A clear strip of wall between them makes the boundary easier to control. Keep the source when the photo documents real people or events; a repaired image is not evidence of what actually happened.
Mark the complete outline and attached items
Choose Remove people and brush over the person you want to remove. Zoom in to inspect hats, hair, feet, bags and clothing edges rather than covering only the torso. Use a smaller brush near a subject you want to keep. Selecting the people category does not automatically identify every passerby; inspect your marked area before submitting and avoid covering unrelated background for convenience.
Look for another silhouette in the scene
A person may disappear while their shadow remains on the pavement. Inspect shadows at their feet, reflections in windows and reflected shapes on water. Include a region only when you can attribute it to the removed person. Shared shadows and overlapping reflections can also contain your intended subject, so clearing them wholesale can damage the image. Dark pavement patterns are not necessarily shadows.
Judge the repair through the background structure
Follow tile seams, rails and the horizon across the repaired area. Check for sudden bends, then inspect the retained subject and the place where the passerby's feet used to be. Return to the final display size to evaluate the composition. When a large area lacks background information, another photo from the same session or a tighter crop may be more controllable than expanding the selection repeatedly. Download before moving to the crop tool.
