Cropping avatars and covers: subjects, space and safe areas

Start with square, 4:5 or 16:9 framing, then check circular masks, headline space and real output dimensions.

Choose a ratio after checking the destination

One photo may become a square avatar, a circular profile image or a wide cover. The ratio establishes a frame, but its display container may crop it again. Check the platform's current requirements, then try the 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 presets. These are common composition starting points, not official dimensions for every platform.

A circular avatar hides the corners

When a square image is shown as a circle, corner details disappear. Keep the face, wordmark or key product detail toward the middle and allow room around the head and shoulders. Enlarging a low-resolution source cannot recover missing detail: cropping only preserves the selected region.

Leave useful space in a cover

If a headline will overlay the photo, leave a quieter area beside the subject. Desktop and mobile views can expose different portions, so important text is often better rendered by the page than embedded at the image edge. This tool does not add text or detect device-specific safe areas. Preview the finished cover at the actual destination.

Verify the final pixels

Check left and top offsets, width and height, and keep the selection inside the source. Ratio and size differ: both 600×600 and 1200×1200 are square. Presets lock the ratio while dimensions change together. Select Freeform before editing width and height independently. Inspect the downloaded PNG's dimensions and compare compressed formats if necessary; PNG is not always smaller.

Checklist

  • Check ratio, minimum dimensions and masking at the destination
  • Keep essential details away from potentially hidden edges
  • Preview the download inside the actual avatar or cover container
