How to split a photo into a clean nine-tile grid

Prepare the right aspect ratio, create a 3×3 grid, understand uneven pixel dimensions and ZIP numbering, and check the tiles before posting.

Calculate tile dimensions

1200 × 1200 px3 × 3400 × 400 px
1201 × 1201 px3 × 3400 or 401 px; all pixels retained

Match the full image to your grid

A nine-tile grid uses 3 rows and 3 columns. If each tile needs to be square, the original should be square too. In general, the full width-to-height ratio must equal columns divided by rows: 4 columns and 2 rows need a 2:1 original. Crop and download first, then open that file in the split tool.

Check what crosses a boundary

A face, product logo or sentence cut at a boundary may not make sense as an individual tile. Inspect the grid preview and adjust the original composition if needed. The current tool uses a regular grid; it does not identify people or automatically move boundaries away from important content.

Set your rows and columns

Each direction supports 1–6 divisions: 3×3 creates 9 tiles, 2×4 creates 8, and 6×6 creates 36. Choose 1 row or column for strips. A reassembled preview follows the actual grid, and filenames include row and column positions. Each output is a PNG without an added watermark, border or gap.

Uneven divisions still keep every pixel

A 1000-pixel width cannot be split into three integer widths of 333.33 pixels. The tool distributes integer boundaries, so some tiles can be one pixel wider or taller than others without losing the edges. If all tiles must be exactly equal, prepare dimensions divisible by the number of columns and rows.

Save the ZIP and check posting order

Tile numbers start at the top left, move across each row and then down. Download and inspect the ZIP, or save individual tiles. Numbers are not a universal posting order: some platforms show new posts first and others crop uploads. Check the platform preview before posting and keep your original to generate the grid again.

Before you finish

  • Start with a square original for square 3×3 tiles
  • Check whether boundaries cut through important details
  • Inspect extracted files and verify platform arrangement
